The project

An OPV facade concept made of bamboo

In partnership with Merk, OledWorks and Kolon, ASCA unveiled a new textile facade concept combining OPV (organic photovoltaic) and OLED (organic electroluminescent diode) technologies at the 2017 Seoul Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism.

Inspired by this development, the German architects Nikolaus Hirsch and Michel Müller and the Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, based in New York, have developed a new component of their project called "The Land". The new facade system will produce energy and emit light using the OPV and OLED technologies, transparently combining natural beauty with innovative design.

The alliance of organic photovoltaics and OLED

As far as the design is concerned, the facade incorporates a series of 4m-long bamboo tubes symbolizing elegance and simplicity. The integrated OPV modules produce energy during daylight hours. The energy is then stored and used after nightfall to power the OLED diodes.

ASCA acted as complete solution integrator during the project, including the OPV and OLED elements: from design of the electrical system to supervision of on-site installation.

The message "Do We Dream Under The Same Sky" of Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija portrays a universal and global culture in the face of current individualism and promotes unity, sharing, exchange and experimentation. The installation site is located in a public space in Seoul to maximize the visibility of the project.
